Why does my period seem to go everywhere BUT on the pad?

Every time I wear a pad, my period goes all over it, and then leaks through my underwear, and leaves a stain on my pants. It's embarrassing. Am I wearing the pad wrong??? This happens to me like everyday! And I'm too scared to use a tampon. :/
